Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Resort: We had a lovely stay at Bunaken overall, the facilities are great, the rooms were large, clean and had great A/C with excellent Wi-Fi. The resort is on the beach, and you can access great snorkelling sites from the sand (as long as it is high-tide) and the swimming pool is perfect for relaxing after a morning of diving and watching the stunning horizon. The staff were friendly and keen to help. The food was excellent for one of us, who enjoys eating fish, chicken, noodles and rice for breakfast. The other one would have preferred a greater selection of fresh food – more fruit options would be nice. Diving: We had a lovely time diving with PS Bunaken, all the equipment is brand new (some of it had never been used!) and they were very flexible, allowing us to dive an hour after arriving at the resort. Our DM, Ransley, found us an average of 4 turtles and 4 nudibranchs per dive, and paced the dives well. He also helped take some amazing pictures and videos for us. The diving overall was incredible, some of the best we’ve seen anywhere, and the coral and sea-life was overwhelming at times. The crew were excellent with sorting out all the equipment, they always had our equipment ready to go and would change all our tanks for us. It made diving very easy. Timothy was always very smiley and welcoming which was nice.

Negative: We found the dinner options limited – it was the same menu for lunch and dinner every day, and preferred to eat in local restaurants. With other dive companies, there is often a livelier atmosphere, with debriefs and conversations during surface intervals. The team could be quite quiet and only talk amongst themselves, this might be because they are a new team, or perhaps a language barrier, but it left us feeling separate from the crew. If we had one request from the resort and diving school, it would be to not use single-use plastic. Every day snacks were individually provided in disposable plastic containers which is unusual compared to other places, which use re-usable Tupperware-style containers. This felt particularly important when swimming though heaps of plastic and garbage floating in the water at the end of several dives.
